How to Keep Your Copper Bracelet Looking Great — 3 Simple Methods

How to Keep Your Copper Bracelet Looking Great — 3 Simple Methods

Copper is reactive — it darkens, develops a patina, and can occasionally leave a green mark on skin. None of these are problems. They are all easy to manage with things already in your kitchen. Here is the short version.

Lemon and Salt (Fastest)

Cut a lemon in half, dip in salt, rub over the bracelet. Rinse thoroughly, dry immediately. Two minutes, brings even dark copper back to near-original shine. Works on all our bracelets including the carved Om Mani — use a soft toothbrush on the carved grooves.

Ketchup (Gentler)

Apply, leave 10 minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush, rinse. The acetic acid in ketchup does the same job as lemon but more gently. Better for intricate carved detail.

Prevent the Green Skin Mark

Apply a thin coat of clear nail varnish to the inside of the bracelet (skin-contact side only). Creates a barrier. Reapply every few months. Also helps to keep the bracelet dry — remove before swimming or showering.

When Not to Polish

The patina is beautiful. Many wearers prefer the aged copper look — especially on hand-beaten bracelets where the darkened hammer marks create a natural two-tone effect. Polish when you want the shine back. Otherwise, just wear it.
