The Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajya Tathagatta or the Healing Buddha, possesses the ability to heal the afflictions of birth and death. His radiant body resembles Lapis Lazuli, and he resides in the purified eastern realm of Lapis Lazuli. Assisted by two Bodhisattvas, Suryaprabha and Candrapraha, he transforms and imparts teachings to beings in that realm.
As per the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha Sutra, he made 12 profound vows before attaining Buddhahood. These vows encompass the elimination of sickness from all beings, facilitating their ease and happiness on the path to Buddhahood, and liberating them from disasters and calamities. In the Tibetan medical tradition, Bhaisajya Buddha is regarded as the source of all medical knowledge. This Buddha is invoked to dispel disasters and alleviate sickness.
