In his left hand, he holds a Padma (lotus) adorned scripture, representing his attainment of ultimate wisdom. Manjushree sits upon a single lotus, his seat of enlightenment.

Legend has it, according to the Swayambhu Purana, that the Kathmandu Valley was once a lake. Manjushri's act of cutting a gorge at Chovar transformed the valley into a habitable land, with the lotus settling at the center becoming the revered Swayambhunath Stupa.
